Garsington Opera at Bridgwater Quayside Festival presents

SEMELE

Music George Frideric Handel

Libretto William Congreve

Conductor Jonathan Cohen

Director Annilese Miskimmon

Designer Nicky Shaw

This is an exciting opportunity to see free of charge Garsington Opera’s film of the opera Semele.  This will be shown on a big screen in King Square as part of the Bridgwater Quayside Festival at 2pm on Saturday 29th July.

Handel’s soaring choruses and beautiful orchestral writing enhance this most touching and humorous opera. This is a love story with a twist; the god Jupiter is captivated by the all-too-human Semele and entrances her with his promises. She exults in everything Jupiter has to offer but in this parable of over-ambition and over-indulgence, Semele flirts with danger and suffers the consequences.

Come to Garsington Opera’s free outdoor screening, which sees award-winning director and designer Annilese Miskimmon and Nicky Shaw, transport us to the enchanting world of the gods.

Take Part in a Free Community Choir

If you enjoy singing and would like to be part of a community choir for this event, come and join us on Saturday July 29th at 12 noon in the Bridgwater Library  to learn a chorus from Handel’s opera Semele.

Garsington Opera for All are offering anyone who enjoys singing the opportunity to come along and join a community choir to learn a chorus from the opera.

Singers and the Musical Director from Garsington Opera will explain the story of the opera and teach everyone a short, easy chorus from Semele.

After learning the music and singing it through together, you will have the opportunity to  sing the chorus through by the big screen, just before the film of the opera is shown. It is a short walk from the library to King Square ( 5min) and we invite you to join us here and walk with us for the opening of Semele.

Refreshments will be provided at the Library.

Come along and join the fun – no previous experience necessary!
